Veterans — Take advantage of all your benefits through the Veterans on Medicaid program.
Are you, or do you know a veteran...
- Needing long-term care?
- Currently living in a nursing facility?
- Do you have a service-connected disability?
- Do you receive or anticipate needing Medicaid for your care?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be eligible for additional benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans on Medicaid program — even if you served many years ago or aren't currently enrolled in Medicaid, you could still benefit.
While Medicaid helps support thousands of Ohio veterans, many may also qualify for VA healthcare. These benefits offer more options, resources and support!
What are the additional benefits?
The Veterans on Medicaid Program helps eligible veterans secure all their earned benefits —
- The cost of the veteran's care is covered by the VA.
- Veterans get to keep ALL of their service-connected disability compensation.
- The VA provides additional oversight at care facilities.
- The veteran and their family can choose the option that best meets their needs.
- Veterans will AVOID Medicaid lookback, penalties and spend-downs.
When approved for VA long-term care, we can help you transition to a suitable VA care or VA-contracted care facility.
Who is immediately eligible?
- Veterans currently residing in a nursing facility or other health care setting or in need of long-term care.
- Veterans who have a 70 % or higher service-connected disability (or 60% with unemployability status).
- Veterans currently receiving Medicaid benefits.
Who is potentially eligible?
- Any honorably discharged veteran who needs or will need Long-Term Care in a nursing home.
Once a veteran has applied for this program, the Ohio Department of Medicaid, through the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, will notify the veteran and act as an advocate for him or her in communicating with the VA Medical Center as well as the local county veterans service commission.
Your ombudsman can help you navigate the process!
You can reach Jimmy Gillespie at jimmy.gillespie@dayton-ombudsman.org.
He can help get you the benefits you deserve, and work with you and your family to make this transition as easy as possible.
